How to Merge PDF Files (Combine PDFs Into One)
How to combine several PDFs into a single document, in the order you want, without Acrobat and without uploading anything. Covers page order, mixed page sizes, file size, and the limits worth knowing.
TL;DR
- Merging PDFs copies the pages of several files into one new document, in whatever order you arrange them. Nothing is re-encoded, so quality is unchanged.
- Free way: Merge PDF combines any number of PDFs in your browser — drag the rows to set the order, then download. No upload, no account, no watermark.
- Set the order before you merge. Fixing it afterwards means using Organize PDF to move pages around one at a time.
- If your files have different page sizes, switch on Standardize to normalize everything to A4 or Letter — details in the mixed page sizes guide.
- The merged file is roughly the sum of its parts. If that is too big, compress it afterwards, not before.
- Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked first — no merge tool can read an encrypted file.
- Adobe Acrobat, Smallpdf, macOS Preview, and even the Windows print-to-PDF trick all work too; comparison below.
Combining PDFs is one of those tasks that sounds trivial and then is not, usually because the files came from different places: a scanned form, an invoice exported from accounting software, a slide deck, a signed cover letter. This guide covers how to merge them into one document, how to control the order, what to do when the pages do not match, and which tool makes sense for which situation.
What Merging Actually Does
A merge copies the pages of each source PDF, in order, into one new document. Each page brings its own content with it — the text objects, the embedded fonts, the images, the vector drawings — so nothing is re-encoded and nothing degrades. This is why merging is safe to do repeatedly: unlike compressing or converting, it is not a lossy operation.
What does not always survive is the metadata layered on top of the pages. Bookmarks, document-level JavaScript, embedded attachments, and digital signatures live outside the page content, and simple merge tools generally drop them. Signatures are the important case: a digital signature certifies a specific document, so merging that document into a larger one necessarily invalidates it. If you need signed pages to stay verifiable, keep them as a separate file.
How to Merge PDF Files — Step by Step
- 1
Open the Merge PDF tool
Go to Merge PDF on WeConvertIt. Everything runs in your browser using pdf-lib — your documents are never uploaded.
- 2
Add all of your PDFs
Drag the files onto the drop zone or click to browse. They can come from anywhere and be any size or orientation; mixed sources are the normal case.
- 3
Drag the rows into the order you want
Use the grip handle on each row to move files up or down. Dragging works with a mouse and with touch on mobile. The merged document follows this order exactly.
- 4
Decide on page size
Keep original sizes preserves each page exactly as it is. Standardize redraws every page onto a uniform A4 or Letter sheet with your chosen orientation — useful when the sources do not match.
- 5
Merge and download
Click Merge PDFs. The combined document is built in the browser and downloads immediately. From there you can carry on in Organize PDF or Compress PDF.
Getting the Page Order Right
Order is set by the file list, not by filename, so a folder full of documents named scan-1, scan-10, scan-2 will not sort itself sensibly on its own. Arrange the rows deliberately before merging. It is much less work than fixing it afterwards: correcting the order in the finished document means opening it in Organize PDF and moving pages one at a time, which is fine for a small slip and tedious for a badly ordered fifty-page merge.
If only part of a source file belongs in the result, extract that part first with Split PDF, then merge the extracted range. Merging whole files and deleting pages afterwards works too, but it is slower and easier to get wrong.
When the Page Sizes Do Not Match
Combine an A4 scan, a US Letter invoice, and a landscape slide and the merged document jumps size and orientation every few pages. It reads awkwardly on screen and prints worse. The Standardize option solves this by creating a new page at your chosen size and drawing each source page onto it, scaled to fit and centred, with the aspect ratio preserved so nothing is stretched or cropped — pages of a different shape simply get even margins. Because the content is embedded as a vector form object rather than a screenshot, the text stays sharp and selectable. The mixed page sizes guide walks through the trade-offs in more detail, including when keeping the original sizes is the right call.
Merging Tools Compared
| Tool | Cost | Uploads your files? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merge PDF (WeConvertIt) | Free, no account | No — runs in your browser | Drag-to-reorder, optional A4/Letter standardization. Does not carry bookmarks across or merge encrypted files. |
| Adobe Acrobat Pro | Paid subscription | No — desktop app | The most complete option: preserves and rebuilds bookmarks, combines non-PDF files into one document, supports PDF Portfolios and Bates numbering. The right tool for legal and production workflows. |
| Smallpdf / iLovePDF | Free tier, then paid | Yes — server-side | Straightforward and reliable, with the usual caveat that your documents are processed on someone else’s server and free use is capped per day. |
| macOS Preview | Free, built in | No — local app | Open one PDF, show the thumbnail sidebar, and drag another PDF into it. Completely free and private, but fiddly with more than a handful of files. |
| pdftk / qpdf (command line) | Free, open source | No — local | Ideal for scripting or merging hundreds of files on a schedule. Steeper learning curve, total control. |
After Merging
A merged document is the sum of its inputs, so it is often the point at which file size becomes a problem. Compress at the end rather than compressing each input first — one pass over the finished document is both simpler and more effective, and the compression guide explains why some files shrink dramatically and others barely move. If the combined document is confidential, add a password as the final step with Protect PDF, since encryption has to come after every other edit. And if you merged a set of forms, Fill PDF Form still works on the combined file as long as the original fields were interactive.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I merge PDF files into one?
Open a merge tool such as Merge PDF, add all the PDFs you want to combine, drag the rows into the order you want them to appear, and click Merge. The tool copies every page from every file into one new document and hands it back as a download. The whole process takes a few seconds and does not alter the pages themselves.
How do I combine PDF files for free?
Merge PDF is free with no sign-up, no per-day file limit, and no watermark on the output — it runs entirely in your browser. On a Mac you can also do it for free in Preview by dragging pages between thumbnail sidebars. Smallpdf and iLovePDF offer free merging as well, but they upload your documents to their servers and cap free usage.
Can I merge PDFs without Adobe Acrobat?
Yes, and you do not need any installed software at all. Acrobat is excellent but it is a paid subscription, and merging is one of the simplest PDF operations there is — a browser-based tool like Merge PDF, macOS Preview, or a free desktop utility all handle it completely. Acrobat becomes worth it when you need bookmarks carried across, Bates numbering, or portfolio-style combined files.
How do I merge PDFs in a specific order?
Add the files, then drag the grip handle on each row to move it up or down. The merged document follows that sequence exactly, top to bottom. It is worth getting this right before merging — reordering pages after the fact means opening the result in Organize PDF and moving pages individually.
Does merging PDFs reduce quality?
No. In the default Keep original sizes mode, each page is copied across as-is — the same fonts, the same image data, the same vector artwork. Nothing is re-encoded, so there is no generation loss. In Standardize mode pages are drawn onto a new page as vector form objects, which rescales them but keeps text sharp and selectable rather than flattening it to a picture.
Why is my merged PDF so large?
Because merging adds file sizes together — combining five 3 MB files gives you roughly a 15 MB document. That is expected, not a bug. If the result is too big to send, run it through Compress PDF afterwards; the compression guide explains what will and will not shrink.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Not while they are still encrypted — a merge tool cannot read the pages of a locked file. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, merge the unlocked copies, then re-protect the combined document with Protect PDF if it needs to stay confidential.
Is it safe to merge PDFs online?
It depends on the tool. Most online merge services upload your documents to a server and delete them some time later, which is a genuine concern if you are combining contracts, invoices, or medical paperwork. Merge PDF uses pdf-lib inside your browser instead — the files are read from your disk, combined in the tab, and saved back to your downloads folder, with no network request involved.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
There is no fixed limit — the practical ceiling is your browser memory, which comfortably handles dozens of files or several hundred pages. If you are combining something genuinely enormous, merge in two stages: batch the files into a few intermediate PDFs, then merge those.
